PILOTHOUSE (Mainly) MOTORSAILERS UNDER 65'    (MONOHULLED)

Some images down here link to owners associations, or other pages from designers, builders or single owner's pages, where you can find more info about the particular motorsailer or its series. If you have info about a missing type or particular boat, I will be most grateful if you send it to me. I will open specific pages with gathered info for those motorsailers which's data cannot be found through internet. Photographs may be sent to me by e-mail, in JPG format, please.

LABELING SYSTEM
H 15/17 (Example)

First figure relates to the SA/D ratio (to the closest integer), so to the sailing power, and
Second figure relates to the 6*HP/D ratio (to the closest integer), so to the motoring power
Letters group is related to the D/L ratio, as follows (monohulls):

VL = Very low D/L ratio, under 100
L= Low D/L, from 100 to 200, typically 150
M = Medium D/L, from 200 to 300, typically 250
H = High D/L, from 300 to 400, typically 350
VH = Very High D/L, 400+

Intrepretation for monohulled motorsailers:

- If ratio in label is greater than one, the boat is sailing oriented. If less than one, motoring oriented.

- If first figure is 14+ the boat has plenty of power under sails alone.  Lower than 10 seems too low sails power to me for a monohulled motorsailer: The boat should rather be considered a "sail assisted motor boat". Higher than 16 the boat should probably be better classificated as a sailing boat having more or less engine power.

- Second figure being over 18 usually means quite an excess of engine power, in my opinion. For an efficient all around motorsailer, it should be around 14, let's say from 12 to 16. Anyhow, the modern tendency for shorthseas motorsailers, favours light displacement, plenty of power ones, with Power/Disp ratio well over 18.
- What are called  50/50  motorsailers by the "century" rule, become 14/14 (more or less) under this labeling system.

THANKS A LOT!

You may use this Triangle calculator,
to easily calculate your boat's sail area:

(Clik on image to access)

Note: Forward triangle foot is not your jib's foot but the "J" measurement. As an approximation you may measure your working jib (Not the Genoa)

If you need a handy calculator
to figure out your boat's numbers,
here you have an useful one!

Note:
Enter angles in radians.
1 radian = 180º/Pi = 57.25978º (aprox)
1º = 0.0174533 radians (aprox.)
